When Can I Burn the Brush?

Open burning season is from January 15 through May 1.

The open burning must be a minimum of 75 feet from all buildings must be conducted between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm and must take place on the land closest to the source of material to be burned, according to the Department of Environmental Protection regulations (310 CMR DEP 7.07). All fires must be completed by 4 pm.

  • People conducting illegal burning, or who allow a fire to get out of control, may be held liable for the costs of extinguishing a fire, fined, and even imprisoned (MGL c.48 s.13).
  • If you do not have a permit you must come to the Fire Station located at 50 Spring Street to sign for the permit.
  • What can be burned? brush cane driftwood from other than commercial/industrial land clearing.
  • Burning permits are issued at no cost and do not expire.
  • Please call the station before conducting any fires and to be permitted to burn.
