A Message from the Marion Board of Health - Eastern Equine Encephalitis

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health just informed the Town that one mosquito captured in Marion on Sunday, August 18, 2024, tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.  This puts the town at a higher risk for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project is planning to do a town wide spray on Thursday (8/22) in the morning between 2am and sunrise. They will have at least 2 trucks in the town. All spraying will be from the street and the spray travels up to 300 ft from the truck. 

The town has now had mosquitos which have been positive for West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. It's very important that residents take the following steps to protect themselves, their families and pets.  

What should you do?  

1.       Since mosquitos are most active between dusk and dawn, we suggest you avoid outdoor activities that can be postponed during that time.

2.       Use mosquito repellents with an EPA-registered active ingredient and wear long sleeves/long pants.

3.       Clean up any standing water that can serve as a mosquito breeding area.
