REFUSE COLLECTION RULES & REGULATIONS

Proper Containers – Containers shall be tightly-covered, watertight, tapered-sided, galvanized iron or other non-rusting metal or plastic container having handles and a capacity of not less than 10 gallons nor more than 30 gallons per container.  No container and contents weighting over 150 pounds, nor any container that may be ragged or have sharp edges will be collected.  An approved plastic bag, properly tied and of like capacity and weight, may be used in lieu of a rigid container.

Refuse to be collected

Garbage – Garbage shall be placed with rubbish.  Corn husks, oysters, clam and lobster shells may now be deposited for collection with ordinary food wastes.  These wastes shall be well drained of free water, and wrapped tightly in newspaper, bag, plastic or other, and placed in the same tightly covered container as the rubbish.

Rubbish and Garbage – Rubbish and garbage shall be placed in the same container.  Containers are subject to the restrictions described in the section on Proper Containers.

Materials – Materials placed in containers will be packed so as to be easily emptied.

White Metals – White Metals can be brought to the Transfer Station.

Stumps and Stones – No longer accepted at the Transfer Station, may be brought to County Road Recycling (see attached information).

Leaves – Leaves can no longer be picked up curbside as rubbish.  Residents may take the leaves to the compost pile at the Transfer Station.

Brush & Tree Trimmings – No longer accepted at the Transfer Station, may be brought to County Road Recycling (see attached information).

AUTOMOBILE BODIES, AND DEAD ANIMALS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED BY THE TOWN.

Location and Number of Containers – Refuse to be collected must be put in covered containers, subject to the restrictions described earlier, and placed on the outside edge of the sidewalk, or if there is no sidewalk, at the outside edge of the property line, BY 7:00 A.M. ON THE DAY SPECIFIED FOR COLLECTION.  All containers must be removed from the collection side by 7:00 p.m. on the specified day.  The collector shall not be required to collect rubbish of any type in excess of FIVE (5) BARRELS WEEKLY PER RESIDENCE.
